To become a Catholic, one must receive three sacraments: Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation. A person becomes a Christian through Baptism, is nourished by the Eucharist, and strengthened to live as a disciple of Christ through Confirmation.
Until all three sacraments are received, a person is considered to be in the process of initiation and is not yet in full communion with the Catholic Church.
This is why religious education for children continues throughout their school years: they must learn what Catholics believe and how the Catholic faith is practiced. They only complete their initiation into the Catholic Church after they have prepared for and received all three sacraments.
At Church of the Sacred Heart, children usually celebrate Confirmation in the Spring of Grade 8. To do so, they must: complete Religious Education for Grades 1 thru 8, 20 hours of Christian stewardship, and a Confirmation Journal. They must also attend a Candidate Retreat and a Candidate/Sponsor Retreat. If a child has gaps in their Religious Education, the process of preparation can be expect to take at least two years, if not longer, depending on the situation.
